Mungo

$6,000.00

A conceptual painting produced in 2015 using an innovative technique of layering the oil paint in water, dipping the canvas on the surface and lifting the paint up to create this experimental result. While abstract, this painting represents the country in New South Wales where I grew up; big skies, arid land and the lake named for where ‘Mungo Man’ was discovered.

Oil on canvas in a timber frame.

“Mungo’ came into being almost by accident. With a new series in mind, I was working with the possibility of creating a background that would illustrate the ancestry of my subject for “Mutti Mutti Man”, Mr Wally Cooper.

Wally came from the same area as I did in New South Wales. He was an Indigenous man and part of the land. I love the Riverland, the starry night skies and the arid, big sky blistering days and experimented with working with oils on water. Painting the picture ON the water and, with assistance, quickly placing the canvas on the water and “picking up” the painting. When I looked at this canvas, it had created itself.

On a timber frame, this oil on canvas work is ready for hanging.
